Update 08/05/2009
So its been a month in Cameroon, we have made three journeys into the jungle and several visits to Yaounde's Central Hospital. Together with Dr. Mbwelle, we have seen over seventy surgical patients, distributed thousands of medications, and purchased a large amount of new drugs and equipment to restock the mobile pharmacy and surgery. All of this is thanks to your contibutions of funds, drugs, and medical equipment. Every scalpel or suture kit has made another surgery possible, when the doctor saw the bottles of anesthesia we had brought he was overjoyed and explained that they are like gold to him here in Cameroon. Nothing has been shelved or saved up, every donation is being put to immediate use, and more often than not our surgeries and prescriptions come just in time. patients with no regular medical care are being given long overdue treatment for conditions that would have soon disabled or killed them. Medications for pain have helped eleviate the suffering of terminally ill patients who would otherwise have spent their last days in agony, unable to afford the drugs themselves. We have been lucky to take part in this adventure, we have learned a great deal and gotten to know some incredible people and experience an impressive country. Tomorrow we return to the jungle to set up one more mobile hospital, so today we are purchasing supplies that will be completely unavailable there otherwise: saline, syringes, sterile gloves, scalpels and scissors. |
